MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor

Professor of the Department of Oncology

Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine

Oncosurgery of the highest category

At the Department of Oncology of the P.L. Shupyk National University have been working since 1974 and since 1999 have been a professor of oncology.

In 1971, defended candidate dissertation on the topic "Assessment of Modern Methods of Diagnosis and Treatment of Mediastinal Tumors," which focused on the clinical application of the developed technique of intensive-concentration preoperative irradiation of malignant mediastinal tumors. This method contributed to increased radicalism of surgeries and improved survival rates of patients after combined treatment.

The experience accumulated over the next 10 years in the clinic, along with observations of treatment outcomes in patients, was summarized and presented in the monograph "Primary Mediastinal Neoplasms" (1982). The new directions proposed in this clinical oncology section (clinical classification of mediastinal tumors, various types of needle biopsies of tumors, methodology of combined treatment of malignant mediastinal tumors with preoperative intensive irradiation) have been widely used in many oncological institutions in Ukraine and abroad to this day.

Since 1982, began developing and clinically applying intraoperative cryodestruction for lung cancer. Pioneered the use of intraoperative cryodestruction for lung cancer in practical medicine, surpassing similar foreign reports by 20 years. This new treatment method increased the five-year survival rate of patients with peripheral lung cancer from 33% to 61% compared to independent radical surgical treatment, and for stage III tumors, from 15% to 30%. The research conducted was defended in the doctoral dissertation "Modification of Radical Treatment and Development of Prognostic Criteria in Lung Cancer Patients" in 1990.

Since 2000, as part of a planned scientific theme at the Chest Tumor Division of the National Cancer Institute, have been involved in the development and implementation of intra-arterial regional chemotherapy in the comprehensive treatment of patients with malignant mediastinal tumors and tumors of the chest wall. He was the first to perform reconstructive-plastic surgeries for large malignant chest wall tumors in the thoracic department of the National Cancer Institute. Currently, reconstructive-plastic surgeries are widely used in the department's practice.

In addition to the above scientific and practical topics, V. Zakharichev initiated and began studying the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on treatment outcomes in lung cancer patients. This research continues to be carried out in planned scientific themes at the Chest Tumor Division of the National Cancer Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to this day.

Most of my scientific publications in medical journals, speeches at congresses, and conferences of oncologists have been dedicated to issues of surgical, comprehensive, and combined treatment of patients with malignant neoplasms of the mediastinum, chest wall, and lung cancer. In total, over 200 scientific papers have been published, including two monographs, three methodological recommendations, and two textbooks.

From 2010 to 2014, V. Zakharichev focused on studying the anti-tumor effectiveness of the complex use of tumor cryodestruction in combination with local microwave hyperthermia for malignant epithelial tumors of the oral cavity. The preliminary experimental studies served as the basis for the clinical application of the technique in patients with oral mucosa cancer. The results of the conducted research were defended in 2014 in the candidate dissertation by a postgraduate student of the Department of Oncology of the P.L. Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education under the supervision of Professor V.D. Zakharichev.
