The foundation of the courses of lectures on tuberculosis was caused by the significant prevalence of tuberculosis in the early years of the Soviet regime. The first courses were held at Kyiv Institute of Tuberculosis; the lectures and workshops were held by the outstanding scientists, i.e. Academician F. H. Yanovskyi, Full Professor L. Ya. Epshtein. In 1935 on the initiative of Full Professor Morozovskyi N. S., principal investigator of the Institute of Tuberculosis, it was created the Department of Tuberculosis, which was headed by him till 1953.

Later on such prominent scientists as Full Professor F. A. Mykhailov, Full Professor I. P. Lerner, Full Professor M. M. Amosov, Full Professor H. H. Horovenko, Full Professor I. M. Slipukha were engaged in the teaching process at the department. Then the department was headed by such outstanding and talented scientists and teachers as Full Professor O. S. Mamolat, Full Professor B. P. Yashchenko (1966-1988), Full Professor V. H. M’iasnikov (1989-2009).  

In 2008 the Department of Tuberculosis became the Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology as it was taken into account the world experience about the advantage of the combined teaching of two academic disciplines - Phthisiology and Pulmonology. That year the department was headed by MD, Dr. Sc., Full Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology and F. H. Yanovskyi Prize Winner, Director of the SI “National Institute of Phthisiology and Pulmonology named after F. H. Yanovskyi, National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”, Chief Phthisiologist and Chief Pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Feshchenko Yurii I.
