The department was founded in 2011.

The clinical base of the department is the Governmental Institution «Scientific and Practical Medical Centre of Children’s Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine».  The centre is appointed with modern equipment (expert class ultrasonic equipment, angiographs, computer tomograph, 2 magnetic-resonance tomographs rigged with the program of heart evaluation, which is unique in Ukraine, bicycle ergometer, spirometry, navigation system CARTO, Holter-ECG, the system of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, etc.) for the evaluation and treatment ofcardiovascular diseasesin children and adults. The centre is the most experienced in treating congenital and acquired heart diseases in Ukraine. Annually about 15 thousand patients are examined in the outpatient unit of the centre, among them 40 per cent are neonates and infants. About 2 thousand surgical and endovascular interventions are performed in patients with severe cardiac abnormalities and profound arrhythmias (the overall mortality accounts for 0.9 per cent). The operating and X-ray operating theatres are equipped with video cameras and microphones to demonstrate the operations in the real time.  The conference-halls are appointed with telemedicine communication for real-time consultations, the discussion of complex cases with the world top experts in cardiac surgery, etc.
