The scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine is carrying out initiative-research research work "Development of new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of refractive, inflammatory, dystrophic and traumatic diseases of the organ of vision and their clinical experimental justification" (State registration No. 0120U105324, 2020-2025), within which 18 dissertation works are planned. On the basis of the department, since 2002, a specialized Academic Council for the specialty "Ophthalmology" has been working for the defense of candidate and doctoral theses, and since 2015, the journal "Archive of Ophthalmology of Ukraine" has been re-registered and published.

The main directions of scientific research of the department are the development of new methods of surgical treatment of cataract with implantation of an artificial lens, diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal pathology, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, development of a new technique for measuring optical aberrations, development of a model of the Ukrainian phacoemulsifier, development and implementation of methods for determining the biomechanical properties of the fibrous capsule of the eye in pathological conditions, diagnosis and treatment of pathology of the organ of vision in children, diagnosis and treatment of corneal diseases, minimally invasive surgery, diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases of the organ of vision, laser methods of treatment of eye diseases, оphthalmooncology.

The results of the initiative-research work "Development of new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of refractive, inflammatory, dystrophic and traumatic diseases of the organ of vision and their clinical and experimental justification" for 2022 formed the basis of 80 scientific works, including 1 monograph, a chapter in a textbook, 10 articles ( 3 of them in publications indexed in SCOPUS).

The regular organization of international conferences on its basis speaks for the scientific authority of the Department of Ophthalmology. 

2022 year

During 2022, employees of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthсare of Ukraine together with the NGO "Association of Children's Ophthalmologists and Optometrists of Ukraine" organized 3 scientific medical forums, which were entered into the Register of congresses, congresses, symposia and scientific-practical conferences to be held in 2022, agreed upon by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine: scientific and practical conference with international participation "Ophthalmological spring without conservatives", scientific and practical conference with international participation "One must see one's childhood `2022" and scientific-practical conference with international participation "Refraction Plein Air `2022 ". 

In addition, the Department of Ophthalmology held 7 short-term professional seminars: "Penetrating Eye Wounds of Wartime" (28.03-29.03.2022); "Wartime orbital injuries and ocular prosthetics" (04.04-05.04.2022); "Modern technologies of reconstructive surgery of combat trauma to the organ of vision and its complications" (April 11, 2022); "Organization of emergency ophthalmic care in wartime conditions" (April 18, 2022); "First aid for victims with damage to the organ of vision and accessory eye apparatus in wartime conditions" (April 25, 2022); "Current requirements for the stages of conducting and the possibility of reconstructive surgery for combat injuries of the eyeball and accessory eye apparatus" (18.05.2022); "Fundamentals of reconstructive surgery of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye in combat injuries of the eyeball" (10.06.2022).

These events brought together thousands of ophthalmologists, pediatric ophthalmologists and optometrists from Ukraine and foreign colleagues from Great Britain, Poland, Switzerland, Latvia and Georgia. The purpose of the conferences is to spread the latest knowledge and skills in ophthalmology and optometry. Based on the materials of scientific and practical conferences with international participation "One must see one's childhood `2022" and "Refraction Plein Air `2022" 2022, collections of theses have been published.

The scientific and practical conference with international participation "Ophthalmological spring without conservatives" was held online on February 12, 2022.

As part of the scientific and practical conference "Ophthalmological Spring without conservatives", a number of act lectures were read: act lecture "Procedure of certification - calculation of points and necessary documents, latest instructions" (by the head of the Department of Ophthalmology, chairman of the board of the NGO "Association of Children's Ophthalmologists and Optometrists of Ukraine", Professor Serhiy Rykov); "Treatment of glaucoma - a successful start" (by Iryna Shargorodska, professor of the Department of Ophthalmology); "Methods of diagnosis of Lyell, Sjogren, Steven-Jones syndromes with eye damage" (by the professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, head of the "Association of Specialists in Ophthalmoplasty and Ocular Prosthetics", Oksana Petrenko), "Route of Patients with Congenital Cataract" (by Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology Yuriy Barinov), "Clinical case of undiagnosed post-covid chorioretinitis in a patient with high myopia" (Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology Yulia Panchenko) and "Post-covid and post-vaccination complications. Peripheral dystrophies of the retina" (by Oleg Parkhomenko, assistant of the Department of Ophthalmology).

The scientific program of the conference "You must see your childhood 2022" (June 11, 2022) included a wide range of topical issues of modern ophthalmology: features of war trauma in children, the latest recommendations for the management of patients with congenital and acquired eye pathology.

As part of the scientific and practical conference "Refractive plein air 2022", employees of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Health Care of Ukraine Professor Serhiy Rykov, Professor Iryna Shargorodska, Professor Oksana Petrenko, Professor Serhiy Mogilevskyi, Associate Professor Yuriy Barinov, Associate Professor Dmytro Zhmuryk, associate professor Yuliya Panchenko, associate professor Nataliya Lavryk, candidate of medical sciences Oleg Parkhomenko presented lectures, reports, review of clinical cases with coverage of current areas of ophthalmology.

Acting lecture "Artificial intelligence - new horizons in ophthalmology" Corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, head of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine , chairman of the board of the NGO "Association of Children's Ophthalmologists and Optometrists of Ukraine" Serhiy Rykov aroused great interest among the participants of the conference, because the development of artificial intelligence is already fundamentally changing the landscape of health care for the benefit of doctors and their patients, allows to carry out diagnosis and treatment of the most serious diseases, in particular pathologies of the organ of vision, at a new level.

Iryna Shargorodska, professor of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, in the lecture "The Digital Revolution is Changing the Face of Ophthalmological Practice" emphasized that the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in clinical practice will soon allow optimizing the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, which today is extremely an actual medical and social problem both in the world and in Ukraine.

Practical experience and knowledge were shared by Oksana Petrenko, Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, in the report "Peculiarities of modern combat trauma of the organ of vision, treatment and rehabilitation", because in connection with military actions on the territory of Ukraine, a large the number of patients with mine-explosive injuries turn to ophthalmologists today for first aid, and in the future these patients will require rehabilitation.

The lecture "Modern methods of prevention of reactive complications after surgical treatment of diabetic maculopathy in patients with diabetes" was presented by Serhii Mogilevskyi, Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, and associate Professor Yuliya Panchenko.

The scientific and practical conference with international participation "Refraction Plein Air `22" became another proof of the relevance of the problems of refraction anomalies, cataracts and glaucoma and, most importantly, the awareness of Ukrainian doctors of the importance of the role of the ophthalmologist and optometrist in the treatment and prevention of blindness from ophthalmic diseases.

As part of the scientific-practical conference, a meeting was held between the supporting department of ophthalmology and representatives of related departments on the improvement of training programs for ophthalmologists, pediatric ophthalmologists, and optometrists. A meeting of the EPK of the National Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine "Ophthalmology and tissue therapy" was held.

It is interesting that "REFRACTION PLEIN AIR '22" combined ophthalmological science and practice with Ukrainian culture. This year, the emblem of the conference was Kosiv painted ceramics, which is included in the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.

 

Despite the difficult time of the war in Ukraine, our ophthalmologists hold their front with dignity and continue to raise their professional level, adopting the experience of domestic and international ophthalmology experts.

During the scientific and practical conference, complex clinical cases were examined and discussed, and answers to numerous questions of the participants were provided.

Most of the delegates and guests of the scientific and practical conference noted the high professional and organizational level of its holding.

 

Employees of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine are regular participants in European and international conferences, congresses, and congresses of ophthalmologists.

Thanks to the initiative of the International Council of Ophthalmology, the Virtual World Ophthalmological Congress (WOC2022 Virtual) was held from September 9 to 12, 2022, where any doctor from any part of the world had the opportunity to join WOC2022 in a personal office and gain access to training from world-class experts . Ukrainian delegation consisting of the head of the Department of Ophthalmology, member-cor. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Serhii RYKOV, Professor Iryna SHARGORODSKA and PhD student Olga SAS presented the work "New application possibilities in the use of Oxygen Therapy for the Treatment Degenerations", which was included in the scientific program of the congress as an electronic video report.

Another work on the topic "Methodology for the prevention of complications in bone orbit decompression: individual surgical cutting guides" was presented by the head of the department of ophthalmology, member-cor. National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, by Professor Serhii RYKOV, Professor Oksana PETRENKO and PhD student Olga PRUSAK in the format of an electronic poster.

The Department of Ophthalmology has started work on a project whose goal is to improve the efficiency of diagnosis, operative and conservative treatment of patients with pathology of the organ of vision. The first steps have already been taken to realize the set goal. Participation in WOC2022 Virtual made it possible to present the technologies developed by the department to the global ophthalmological community, to exchange experience with ophthalmologists from different countries of the world, to determine priority areas for further cooperation with foreign partners in medical work and in the field of postgraduate education.

From September 16 to 20, 2022, the 40th anniversary Congress of THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF CATARACT AND REFRACTIVE SURGEONS (ESCRS), accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®), was held in Milan. With nearly 7,500 members from 130 countries, ESCRS is an important global platform in the field of ophthalmology.

Employees of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, Oksana Petrenko and Assistant of the Department of Ophthalmology Olga Denisiuk took an active part in the event, which is a landmark and the largest event that unites ophthalmologists from different countries of the world.

On September 15-17, 2022, 40th Congress of the European Society of Ophthalmoplasty and Reconstructive Surgeons (the 40th ESOPRS Annual meeting) was held in Nice. Employees of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, Oksana Petrenko, and Assistant of the Department of Ophthalmology, Olga Denisiuk, presented various clinical cases of injured eyes in their reports. Ukrainian soldiers, analyzed the main aspects of providing high-tech ophthalmic care to those injured as a result of military operations on the territory of Ukraine.
