On October 11th, 2021 at the Department of Oncology of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine under the chairmanship of the Department Head Professor Prokip Gordiychuk, with participation of the Department teachers Docent Kateryna Kharchenko (the Head of the Department of Minimally Invasive Surgery of the basic institution of the Department – The Kyiv City Clinical Oncological Center) and the cycle curator Professor Stanislav Myasoyedov, the introductory seminar-conference “Ovarian Cancer” for the first year of training doctors-interns, specializing in clinical oncology, was held.

The event was organized in accordance to the face-to-face format provisions, governing the training in a mixed system of the classes attending and the clinical work conduction within the quarantine restrictions. The experience gained by the Department of Oncology in operating of educational work during current and previous years in conditions of different quarantine restrictions had allowed to develop the appropriate algorithms for conduction of the studying process and practical training on clinical bases of the Department, what guaranteed to complete the internship cycle program in full.

Of the 10 interns present at the seminar, 9 the presentations had made, consistently covering individual sections of the topic. Opponents of the speakers also had spoken, the questions were asked lively and objectively, while the teachers clarified and corrected the answers to the discussion questions.

Kateryna Kharchenko, the Associate Professor of the Department, gave a micro-lecture, illustrated by intraoperative photos of her own. Based on the 13-years experience in providing of outpatient and inpatient care for the ovarian cancer patients at the capital's leading clinical oncology facility, she focused on highlighting of the most important provisions of the world's recognized clinical guidelines. Kateryna Kharchenko had explained the conditions for patients to undergo the most progressive combined and complex oncological treatment. The speaker paid special attention to the disease prevention, optimal algorithm for the malignancy staging, dispensary observation, and maintenance therapy. The experience of the Division, headed by Kateryna Kharchenko, was also analyzed, in which 87 complete cytoreductive resections for advanced ovarian cancer were performed last year. These most promising and complex high-tech extended and combined oncogynecological operations bring the most promising oncological results, because they are performed with a curative intent.

Currently, the mentioned Division of the Clinic is undergoing the international certification process as a large-scale center, recognized in accordance to annual performance of more than 50 similar interventions, the surgical and oncological results achieved by qualitative and quantitative criteria of the standard established. It was also emphasized, that the complete cytoreductive resection procedure constitutes, according to the highest internationally recognized requirements, the best and recommended treatment option for the patients with locally advanced ovarian cancer, currently available in two domestic clinics, one of which is the clinical base for the internship cycle at the Department of Oncology of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine.
