On February 15, 2024, a significant surgical event took place at the National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantology named after O.O. Shalimov of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine: a master class on Liver Resection Surgery: Open or Laparoscopic.

The master class was attended by the Head of the Department of Surgery and Vascular Surgery of the Shupyk Healthcare University of Ukraine Professor Savoliuk S.I., Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences.

During the practical-oriented master class led by the staff of the Liver Transplantation Department at the National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantology named after O.O. Shalimov of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, several topics were discussed. These included the modern possibilities of laparoscopic liver resection surgery, aspects of preoperative diagnostic programs, surgical anatomy, patient selection (clinical cases illustrating minimally invasive surgical options), intraoperative planning, selection of instruments and surgical energies, issues of temporary and final hemostasis of liver parenchyma, and moments of converting surgical intervention into an open operation.

In addition, problematic aspects of modern open (laparotomy) hepatobiliary surgery using traditional access methods were also discussed during the master class.

These approaches were illustrated through interesting analyses of clinical cases with interactive discussions involving both online and offline surgical audience participation. The discussions included simultaneous demonstrations of techniques and the course of surgical interventions (from two operating rooms) for both open and laparoscopic techniques in performing liver resections for tumor lesions, accompanied by an active and engaging expert discussion.

The knowledge and information acquired will be valuable for developing new educational plans and programs, as well as for implementing them in the surgical departments at the clinical facilities of the Department of Surgery and Vascular Surgery at the P. L. Shupyk Healthcare University of Ukraine.
