March 4, 2026 - as part of an ongoing initiative to support the professional development of the Ukrainian medical community during these challenging times, a significant educational event took place.
This remote lecture was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Clinical Pathology and Forensic Medicine at the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine, the International Academy of Pathology (IAP), and the Global Pathology and Laboratory Consortium (GPALM), in close association with the University of Michigan.
The event saw an impressive turnout, bringing together Ukrainian physicians from various specialties—including pathologists, cytopathologists, and gynecologists — to engage with their international colleagues, highlighting the interdisciplinary importance of the subject matter.
The keynote speaker was Richard Cantley, M.D., a distinguished expert from the University of Michigan. Dr. Cantley serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratories. His lecture, titled "Cervical Cancer Screening and Pap Test Cytology," provided a comprehensive overview of the most critical aspects of modern laboratory diagnostics.
Key Highlights of the Lecture:
- Global Screening Standards: Cantley offered a detailed analysis of current international protocols for cervical cancer cytological screening. He placed particular emphasis on the frequency of screenings and the clinical rationale for testing across different age groups;
- Morphological Diagnostics: The lecturer presented extensive visual data and descriptions of cytological markers, covering:
- Reactive epithelial changes;
- Non-neoplastic lesions (including inflammatory and parasitic conditions);
- Pre-neoplastic states and malignant neoplasms of the cervix.
- Differential Diagnosis and Complex Cases: A significant portion of the session was dedicated to the challenges of differential diagnosis. Dr. Cantley demonstrated intricate clinical cases from his own practice that required an integrated, multifaceted approach to reach an accurate diagnosis.
The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A period, during which Dr. Cantley provided exhaustive answers to questions from the audience, sharing practical insights into the interpretation of complex Pap test results.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our international partners for their unwavering support of Ukrainian healthcare professionals. Such opportunities to learn from world-class experts enable our doctors to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and implement best diagnostic practices in Ukraine, despite the trials our country continues to face.
