On 17.03.2023, the Department of Emergency Medicine of the  Shupyk National University of Healthcare of Ukraine celebrates its 35th anniversary.

It began its activity in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the Kyiv State Medical University and the order of the Rector, Professor Vitaliy Mykolayovych Girin, No. 71 of 17.03.1988, which was justified by the absence of specialized departments for advanced training of emergency and emergency medicine doctors in Ukraine. Professor Yaroslav Volodymyrovych Goer was appointed the first Head of the Department (1988-1991).

From 1991 to 2018, the Department was headed by Professor Ivan Savvovych Zozulia, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology of Ukraine. From December 2018 to November 2020, Professor Borys Slonetskyi, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, was elected Head of the Department. Since November 11, 2020, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medicine, Associate Professor Anton Volosovets.

Over 35 years of its existence, the department has developed and improved more than 45 programs and curricula for thematic improvement, specialization and internship cycles, pre-certification cycle and internship training programs. The programs and work plans of short-term cycles of the training courses for the teachers of the departments that provide training in emergency medicine, for the teachers of the training bases and the training courses with elements of distance learning were approved.

The staff of the Department has always consisted of highly qualified specialists with considerable teaching experience, medical and scientific experience.

Over 35 years, the department has trained about 15 thousand doctors and more than 1000 interns. The department has a simulation classroom for practicing practical skills.

The staff of the Department has published more than 2000 scientific papers, including 12 textbooks (one is national, "Emergency Medicine. Emergency Medical Care", with 5 reprints), 43 textbooks, 38 monographs, 26 methodological recommendations, 28 newsletters, 13 copyrights to the work, 114 patent certificates.

The staff of the department developed 8 research papers for the state order and 7 clinical trials. They have also developed and proposed new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various diseases with an emphasis on emergency medical care at the pre-hospital and early hospital stages. The department was the first to develop temporary standards for the provision of medical care in emergency conditions (2005).

The department has completed and defended 50 dissertations (9 doctoral and 41 PhD). There were 24 postgraduate students and 45 clinical residents, including 10 foreign citizens.

Professor Zozulia I.S. created a scientific school of neurology and emergency medicine at the department, the main task of which is to study cerebrovascular pathology, closed head injury, spinal cord injury, inflammatory diseases of the nervous system, emergency medical care and social medicine.

The staff of the department provided and provides medical and consulting work at the clinical bases of the department.

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the P.L. Shupyk National Medical University of Ukraine is a supporting (main) department among the departments that conduct postgraduate training of specialists in emergency medicine.

As a supporting department, twice a year it holds meetings of single-profile departments to develop the strategy and tactics for further activities of emergency medical care.

The department has prepared and held 35 scientific forums, including 5 congresses of emergency medical care and disaster medicine specialists.

In 2005, the All-Ukrainian Association of Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine Specialists was established at the constituent congress.

The first president was elected I.S. Zozulya (until 2016).

At the present stage, given the martial law, the Department continues to conduct the educational process remotely, carry out research work, provide medical treatment, lecture material and practical skills are conducted taking into account tactical medicine, emergency care at the stages of evacuation.
