The department was established in 1986 by the Order № 1 of the Ministry of Health of the USSR from 02.01.1986 in accordance with the decision of All-Union meeting of activists of the Ministry of Health on acceleration of scientific and technological progress. At first the department was called the Department of Medical Informatics and Computer Engineering; from 1996 it has become the Department of Medical Informatics. Since 2000 a course of pedagogy and psychology has become a part of the department.

The department is a basic department in the system of postgraduate medical education.

The initiator of the creation of the first department of such a kind not only in Ukraine but also in the territory of the Soviet Union became a famous scientist Ozar Petrovych Mintser, who now heads it. 

The history of the department, as well as the science of informatics, is rather young but full of important events. Nevertheless during its existence the department has become one of the leading in Ukraine and the basic department at the faculty of teaching staff’s advanced training of NMAPE as it conducts the teaching staff’s advanced training in pedagogy and psychology. 

For the last 25 years the department has trained more than seven thousand students, including nearly half of practitioners. Also there were trained the scientific employees, teachers of the higher educational institutions of Ukraine, postgraduate students and masters. More than 15,000 interns and students from the adjacent courses underwent short courses at the department. The staff members of the subdivisions of medical informatics, pedagogy and psychology have conducted over 350 advanced training courses. For more than 25 years of its existence the department’s staff members visited all the regions of Ukraine holding the courses and during the Soviet Union the teaching staff had been at other republics: Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan. 

In 2000 a course of pedagogy and psychology became a part of the Department of Medical Informatics. The Department of Pedagogy and Psychology was established at the faculty of teaching staff’s advanced training in 1995 by the order of the rector of Kyiv State Institute of Advanced Training of Physicians. At the beginning of its activity (September – December, 1995) the department provided the training of psychological and pedagogical module of the course entitled "Modern aspects of medical education", organized by the Department of Medical Informatics and Computer Engineering and in January, 1996 it became to conduct independent courses. Its founder and head was Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Full Professor Mykola Cherpins’kyi.

In 2006 on the department’s initiative there was created the Scientific Educational and Methodological Centre of Distant Education (DE Centre), equipped with powerful modern equipment.
