The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine took an active part in translating the modern textbook General and Emergency Surgery: Core Topics, which was published in 2025. This edition is a Ukrainian translation of the 7th English edition (2024) of Core Topics in General and Emergency Surgery: A Companion to Specialist Surgical Practice, published by Elsevier, in accordance with the license.

In our complex professional field, where access to up-to-date materials is of key importance, the appearance of a high-quality Ukrainian edition is an important event. The textbook covers a wide range of topics, including modern technologies, improving the quality of emergency surgery, diagnostic approaches, patient safety, and more.

Its format is concise and easy to learn for teachers, students, and young doctors, especially when preparing for exams (e.g., FRCS).

The staff of the Department of Emergency Medicine acted not only as experts in adapting terminology, but also as a creative force that ensured proper cultural, linguistic, and clinical editing of the text. As a result, the literature produced meets the academic standards of the university and the requirements of the Ukrainian medical community.

This publication is part of the series "Guide to Specialized Surgical Practice," which aims to bring together key narrow-profile topics into a single, carefully structured source of knowledge. International experts worked on the scientific quality of the publication: editors Hugh M. Patterson and Chris Deans; the series was supervised by O. James Garden and Simon Patterson-Brown; Ukrainian scientific editor — Professor Serhii Khimich.

The participation of the Department of Emergency Medicine of our university in this project is a significant contribution to the development of professional education and clinical practice in Ukraine. We are proud of the result and look forward to the book becoming a valuable asset for anyone seeking to improve their skills in the field of emergency surgery.
