The Department of Language Training and Humanitarian Disciplines at Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine has introduced a new elective academic discipline: “General English Intensive Course for PhD Students.” This initiative demonstrates the University’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of postgraduate education through comprehensive language training and academic development. The course is specifically designed for PhD students at Shupyk University and aims to support their integration into the global academic and scientific community.

The primary objective of the course is to strengthen both general and academic English proficiency among doctoral students. It focuses on developing key linguistic and communicative competencies essential for successful academic performance and participation in international scientific discourse, including comprehension and critical analysis of scientific texts in English; academic writing skills, with an emphasis on structure, clarity, and formal style; oral academic communication, including participation in seminars, discussions, and panel sessions; and the presentation of research findings at conferences, symposiums, and professional meetings.

The curriculum is built around contemporary pedagogical strategies and aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at level C1, with particular emphasis on professional and academic contexts in medicine and healthcare. The program promotes: interdisciplinary language application, development of publication-standard academic writing, integration of authentic materials and simulated academic communication scenarios. The structure and content of the course also take into account the principles of academic mobility and the Bologna Process, thereby contributing to the broader goals of European educational integration.

The launch of this course reflects current trends in higher education and science, where proficiency in English is increasingly regarded as a key component of academic qualification. The ability to engage with international literature, collaborate with global partners, and publish in indexed journals is no longer optional - it is a core requirement for academic success. By supporting students in developing these competencies, the course directly contributes to the University’s strategic priorities, particularly in the areas of internationalization, research excellence, and the modernization of doctoral training.  The course is delivered by experienced educators from the Department of Language Training and Humanitarian Disciplines, who specialize in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the fields of medicine and public health and modern communicative methodologies. The department is known for its academic rigor, interdisciplinary integration, and active engagement in cross-university language initiatives. Its faculty members regularly participate in international conferences, educational exchanges, and curriculum development projects supported by the European Union and national programs.
