On December 19, 2025, the final masterclass of the year was held as part of the NephroHub educational initiative — “Metabolic Architecture and Biotechnology in Kidney and Urinary Tract Diseases.” The event was supported by the Departments of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy and Urology and brought together leading Ukrainian experts in nephrology, urology, and metabolic medicine. Together, they reviewed the key clinical and scientific developments of the year and outlined priorities for advancing patient care.

The masterclass focused on a multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and urolithiasis, highlighting the role of metabolic pathways in disease progression. For the first time in a national educational setting, experts introduced the emerging concept of CKDx (Chronic Kidney Disease of uneXplained cause), differentiating it from CKDu (Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology), and called for the integration of this terminology into Ukrainian clinical nephrology, given the rising number of cases without clearly identified causes.

A dedicated session explored the prevention and management of urinary tract infections in CKD patients, particularly in light of increasing antibiotic resistance. Speakers presented current recommendations on multimodal prevention of recurrence, the biology of stone formation, and the impact of metabolic disorders on disease development. Another major focus was the cardiorenal continuum, including state-of-the-art cardioprotective strategies — especially relevant in advanced CKD, where metabolic decompensation raises cardiovascular risk.

The event also emphasized the importance of personalized cardio-renal-metabolic care, with integrated approaches to managing patients with CKD, type 2 diabetes, hyperuricemia, obesity, heart failure, and other elements of metabolic syndrome.

With this year-end masterclass, NephroHub reaffirmed its role as a driving force in building a professional community committed to evidence-based medicine, systems thinking, and clinical innovation. The event marked a key moment of reflection on the year's accomplishments and challenges — and served as a launchpad for better care strategies for patients with chronic and complex kidney diseases in 2026.
