On December 24, 2025, another scientific and educational event took place, aimed at strengthening the professional level of Ukrainian physicians during the challenging times of war.
The event was made possible through the coordinated collaboration between the Department of Clinical Pathology and Forensic Medicine of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine, the leadership of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP), the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Louisville, and the Global Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Consortium (GPALM) in partnership with the University of Michigan.
Traditionally, the meeting began with a welcoming address by Professor Rouba Ali-Fehmi, Chair of GPALM and Director of Breast Pathology and Breast Pathology Fellowship at the University of Michigan. She expressed her steadfast support for the Ukrainian pathology community and encouraged colleagues to participate actively in the consortium's educational initiatives.
Professor Ali-Fehmi introduced the keynote speaker, Oyewale Shiyanbola, MBBS, who presented a lecture titled: "Mesenchymal Lesions of the Gastrointestinal Tract".
During the presentation, Dr. Shiyanbola focused on complex issues regarding the differential diagnosis of GI neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. The primary emphasis was placed on the following areas:
- Morphological diagnosis of mesenchymal lesions of the gastrointestinal tract: The lecturer provided a detailed analysis of the histological features of mesenchymal lesions in this localization, emphasizing modern approaches to the morphological diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and the challenges of differential diagnosis with other tumors of mesenchymal origin
- The role of immunohistochemical (IHC) studies: Modern algorithms for the interpretation of markers, which are critical for diagnostic verification, were presented
- Morphological monitoring of disease progression
The lecturer thoroughly addressed the current panel of molecular genetic studies for various nosological lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, the specifics of interpreting the resulting data, and the necessity of correlating these findings with the patient's clinical data.
Special attention was given to the synthesis of morphological data with the clinical picture, which is essential for establishing an accurate diagnosis and selecting effective targeted therapy.
This event represents another step in bringing morphological diagnostics in Ukraine closer to modern international standards. We are sincerely grateful to our international partners for the opportunity to learn from the world’s leading experts, enabling Ukrainian doctors to provide high-quality medical care even under the most difficult conditions.
