On May 1, 2026, the online NephroHub master class “Emergency Conditions in Nephrology and Urology” was held. The event was dedicated to current issues in the provision of medical care for patients with emergency conditions in nephrology and urology.

The event was part of the mandatory continuing professional development area “Emergency Medical Care” and provided participants with the opportunity to receive 6 CPD points.

The master class was held in scientific partnership with the Department of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy of Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine. A key scientific and practical component of the programme was the discussion of the draft version of the KDIGO 2026 Clinical Practice Guideline for Acute Kidney Injury and Acute Kidney Disease, with particular attention to modern approaches to the management of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and acute kidney disease (AKD). Participants reviewed updated approaches to the definition of AKI, assessment of disease severity, risk stratification, and clinical situations requiring timely decision-making regarding the urgent initiation of renal replacement therapy (RRT).

Special attention was given to the strategy of appropriate dialysis use in AKI, the management of high-risk patients with chronic kidney disease, medication- and nephrotoxin-induced AKI, and the monitoring of acute loss of kidney function in patients with CKD. The programme also addressed haemolytic uraemic syndrome as a form of thrombotic microangiopathy, focusing on clinical signs, timely recognition, and approaches to emergency care.

The master class had a strong practical focus and was intended for physicians of various specialties who may need to make rapid clinical decisions in patients with acute impairment of kidney function. AKI may occur in the clinical practice of internists, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, urologists, infectious disease specialists, and other healthcare professionals. The patient’s prognosis largely depends on timely recognition, proper assessment of disease severity, and identification of indications for the urgent initiation of renal replacement therapy.

Similarly, thrombotic microangiopathy, whether primary or secondary, may accompany a wide range of diseases and requires a high level of clinical vigilance, timely differential diagnosis, and selection of an appropriate treatment strategy. Educational events of this kind are an important component of physicians’ continuing professional development and contribute to the implementation of modern evidence-based approaches in clinical practice.

The Department of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy of Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine continues its systematic educational activities aimed at improving physicians’ professional competence in nephrology, renal replacement therapy, and emergency medical care.
