The Department of Foreign Languages and Humanitarian Disciplines at Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine continues to strengthen its commitment to high-quality language education through the successful implementation of International English Test Preparation Course delivered by Associate Professor Lorena Mykhailenko, a member of the department’s academic staff.
The course was designed to prepare students for internationally recognised Pearson English language assessments and to develop both their communicative competence and exam-oriented skills. The programme attracted students seeking to enhance their academic and professional prospects through obtaining an international language qualification.
Throughout the course, participants received comprehensive training covering all components of the Pearson test format, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Particular emphasis was placed on familiarising students with the structure of the examination, effective time management strategies, and approaches to completing a range of task types.
Associate Professor Lorena Mykhailenko employed a student-centred, practice-oriented methodology, combining theoretical input with intensive hands-on activities. The course included simulated test conditions, targeted exercises, and continuous assessment, enabling students to monitor their progress and address individual challenges. Particular emphasis was placed on developing fluency, accuracy, and confidence in real examination settings.
An important component of the course was personalised feedback, which enabled participants to better understand the assessment criteria and improve their performance in each section of the test. Students engaged in interactive tasks, group discussions, and individual assignments, contributing to a dynamic and supportive learning environment.
According to participant feedback, the course significantly increased their confidence in using English and provided them with a clear understanding of the requirements of Pearson assessments. Many students reported measurable improvements in their language skills and expressed readiness to successfully complete the examination.
The initiative reflects Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine strategic focus on aligning its educational practices with international standards and expanding opportunities for students in the global academic and professional context. By offering such preparation courses, the Department of Foreign Languages and Humanitarian Disciplines ensures that students are well equipped to meet the demands of international certification systems.
The department plans to continue offering similar programmes, further enhancing students’ language proficiency and supporting their academic mobility and career development. In addition, the department intends to expand its range of educational initiatives, including the introduction of a Business English Club; workshops on CV writing, cover letters, and application forms; and specialised courses in professional English for medical staff.
