On May 3, the department of cardiology at Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine held a cardiology elective session. The event was attended by family physicians, internists, cardiologists, and oncologists.
The meeting was organized to promote modern clinical guidelines and address the most common controversial issues in the management of cardiology patients.
The central topic of discussion was the management of patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). This topic was presented by Serhiy Kozhukhov, MD, head of the department of clinical pharmacology and cardio-oncology at the state institution "National Scientific Center 'M.D. Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology, Clinical and Regenerative Medicine' of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine." His lecture highlighted the patient pathway with VTE – from primary care to specialized centers – with emphasis on anticoagulant selection, risk assessment, and duration of therapy.
Particular attention was given to cancer-associated thrombosis, which is increasingly common in clinical practice. The current approaches to diagnosis and treatment of such patients were presented by Nataliia Dovhanych, PhD, research fellow of the department of clinical pharmacology and cardio-oncology at the state institution "National Scientific Center 'M.D. Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology, Clinical and Regenerative Medicine' of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine." The speaker reviewed action algorithms based on current guidelines and discussed real clinical challenges faced by physicians.
To conclude the event, Professor Maryna Dolzhenko, MD, head the department of cardiology at Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine, and Tetiana Simahina, PhD, assistant professor of the department of cardiology at Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine, held a discussion titled “The Long Journey from Heart Defect to Stroke and Beyond…” The lecturers outlined the complex clinical trajectory of patients with structural heart defects and the associated risks of thromboembolism and recurrent strokes, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary team in managing such cases.
