The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine continues its active educational outreach aimed at enhancing the professional competencies of physicians across different regions of Ukraine.

Recently, a two-day workshop titled “Psychological First Aid and Crisis Communication in Medical Practice” was held in the city of Rohatyn. The event was conducted by the Head of the Department, Professor Anton O. Volosovets, and brought together physicians from the Rohatyn Central District Hospital and the Rohatyn Primary Health Care Center.

The workshop program focused on contemporary challenges in medical practice, where, alongside clinical expertise, increasing importance is placed on competencies in providing psycho-emotional support to patients. Participants explored the pathophysiology of stress, mechanisms underlying acute and chronic stress reactions, and the physician’s role in early identification and management of these conditions.

Special attention was given to practical aspects, including:

— self-regulation techniques (breathing exercises, mindfulness, grounding);

— algorithms of crisis communication with patients and their relatives;

— development of emotional intelligence, empathy, and assertiveness in physicians;

— prevention of professional burnout and restoration of personal resilience among healthcare providers.

The training was delivered in an interactive format, incorporating case-based discussions and role-playing scenarios (such as “difficult patient” and “family member in crisis”), enabling participants not only to acquire theoretical knowledge but also to practice essential skills in settings closely simulating real clinical environments.

Such educational initiatives represent an essential component of continuous professional development and align with modern approaches to competency-based training in emergency medicine, where effective communication and psychological resilience are critically important.

The Department of Emergency Medicine will continue to implement educational initiatives aimed at improving the quality of medical care and supporting physicians in their daily clinical practice.
