Another expert masterclass, “Kidney Disease in Pregnancy,” was held within the framework of the NephroHub scientific and educational project, with the Department of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy serving as the academic partner. The event focused on contemporary approaches to managing pregnancy in women with chronic kidney disease, autoimmune and systemic disorders—conditions that only a few decades ago were regarded as near-absolute contraindications to motherhood. The programme brought together leading Ukrainian experts in nephrology, rheumatology, and obstetrics and gynecology – Stella Kushnirenko, Iryna Holovach, Dmytro Rekalov, Tetiana Mefford, Dmytro Konkov, Mila Kyrylchuk, Liubov Savytska, and Yurii Kalantarenko, who provided an overview of the latest evidence-based strategies and clinical algorithms.

The lectures addressed key topics such as immunosuppressive therapy during pregnancy; management of patients with antiphospholipid syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus; modern strategies for controlling severe preeclampsia; diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis in pregnant women; and the specific challenges of managing pregnancy in women with chronic kidney disease, including those on renal replacement therapy and those with concomitant anemia. Particular emphasis was placed on interdisciplinary collaboration, as a coordinated team approach is essential to preserving maternal kidney function and ensuring a safe course of pregnancy.

Thanks to advances in medical science, dialysis technologies, modern immunosuppressive regimens, and optimized blood pressure control, thousands of women with chronic kidney disease now have a realistic chance of becoming mothers. The overarching message of the masterclass was that every woman, even with chronic illness, has the right to motherhood—provided that pregnancy is carefully planned and expertly managed. Educational initiatives of this kind are therefore critically important: they enable physicians to update their knowledge, refine practical skills, and implement best international practices in everyday Ukrainian clinical care.

Every preserved pregnancy and every healthy baby born to a woman with kidney disease is a shared victory for the physician, the patient, and the entire multidisciplinary team. The Department of Nephrology and Renal Replacement Therapy will continue to develop the NephroHub project and to initiate new educational events aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with kidney pathology.
