ORPHEUS (The Organization for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System) - is an association of medical schools whose goal is to develop standards for PhD programs.

Ukraine is represented in this respected international organization, which brings together 115 leading universities from around the world, by only four institutions: Gorky Donetsk National Medical University, Zaporizhzhia State Medical University, Sumy State University, and Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine.

ORPHEUS was established in April 2004 with the participation of the European Conference on the Harmonization of Doctoral Programs in Biomedicine and Medical Sciences, held in Zagreb. It turned out that despite many similarities, doctoral programs also have important differences in content and expected outcomes. Thus, a PhD degree can have different content in different parts of Europe.

Delegates from 25 universities and 16 European countries agreed that there is a need for European harmonization and adopted the "Declaration of the European Conference on the Harmonization of Doctoral Programs in Medicine and Health Sciences" (the "Zagreb Declaration"), which contains the first European consensus statement on what a doctoral program should look like.

The purpose of ORPHEUS is to

  • enhance career opportunities for young PhDs;
  • exchange information within the community and increase the contribution of its members to medicine and society as a whole;
  • representing higher education and research in the field of biomedicine and life sciences and influencing policy development at the national, European and international levels;
  • encouraging cooperation between the members of the Association and the creation of effective bilateral and multilateral networks;
  • promoting cooperation in research and development of joint PhD programs and harmonization of these programs;
  • encourage academic mobility.

A joint project of the NHU and the Karolinska Institute

Joint project, which was developed by a team of scientists from our University and the Karolinska Institute, won the SI Baltic Sea Neighborhood Program - Special Call for Ukraine competition.

The aim of the project is strengthening the competencies of PhD students and young scientists to effectively contribute to the improvement of the healthcare system, in particular in the field of medical care, especially for children and adolescents in the de-occupied territories of Ukraine.

This project is considered the first stage of a multi-stage cooperation between the Karolinska Institute and the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the health care system in the de-occupied territories. The approved project, among other things, provides for the preparation of the next grant application.

The project will be available to both a group of PhD students of the University and their supervisors, and a wider range of young scientists from all over Ukraine, who will be able to participate in the planned training seminars and workshops organized at the Karolinska Institute and the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine.

A visit of the Swedish delegation to Ukraine is planned to familiarize themselves with the opportunities and challenges of Ukrainian healthcare institutions. An important component of the proposed project is to take into account the findings from Ukraine to strengthen the health care systems of Sweden and the countries of the WHO European Region in general. The study will focus on the provision of medical care to children and women, physical and psychological rehabilitation, strengthening the coverage of children with preventive vaccinations, etc.
